SURROGATE OBJECT: VARIATION ON TRANSITIONAL OBJECT

Sometimes, children need something special to be soothed and stay calm. When I was young I traveled everywhere with a stuffed lamb—aptly named Lambie. Lambie and I slept together, hiked together, and when I was old enough to go to school my mother assured me that she would take excellent care of Lambie. Lambie, or whatever lovey a child chooses, is called a Transitional Object. Many times a child just needs something familiar to accompany them into unfamiliar situations. A child may want to bring their favorite blanket to the dentist, or on their first plane ride. It is a way to tie the familiarity and comfort of home to new experiences.
